River Biss Public Realm Strategy

I'm not sure how much people get paid to dream up these grand titles!

Using funding of £148,000 from the South West RDA, West Wiltshire District Council, working with consultants Halcrow will be undertaking a series of exhibitions which will outline the vision for the conservation and development of the River Biss corridor.

The strategy aims to provide the requirements for the transformation of the river corridor, capitalising on the hidden waterfront, improving the potential for investment and enhancing the overall image of Trowbridge.

The exhibition will be at held at the Shires shopping centre from 9am - 6 pm on Saturday, 8th March.  It will be at the Civic Hall in Trowbridge Park from 10am - 4pm on Monday, March 10th and then at Trowbridge Library from the 11th - 17th March.
Responses have to be in by Friday 28th March.

Local Elections

Just to let you know that Ernie Clark was elected to the County Council to represent the Hilperton side of Paxcroft Mead. He replaced Sarah Content who resigned her seat.  Peter Fuller was elected to represent the Trowbridge part of Paxcroft Mead.
This seat became vacant following the death of Grace Hill.

Paxcroft Mead Community Centre Annual General Meeting
Tuesday 20th May 2008 at 8.00pm in the centre

This year the format of Annual General Meeting is changing.  Once we become a registered charity, the Centre has to conform to very strict rules of management and conduct.  In anticipation of our change of status, the Management Committee has decided to conduct the AGM using the procedures laid down by the Charity Commission.

John and Pauline Marples (our Chairman and Secretary have been working hard to create the documents that are required as part of the process.  These are: -

Core Strategy for West Wiltshire

West Wiltshire District Council is currently consulting on its new core strategy document which defines an outline development plan for the area for the next 20 years.
The Council are collecting information on the visions we have for where we live and how should they conserve our environment whilst planning for new housing, places to work and community facilities?
For full details you can look at the Core Strategy document and download a questionnaire from the council website. Click here for a link to the WWDC website.
Responses have to be in by February 29th.

Le Club Français

Le Club Français which meets on Thursdays at the Community Centre made the local press this week.

During the session, the children celebrated Shrove Tuesday and Mardi Gras, learning about French culture, dressing up, tasting crêpes and having their own Mardi Gras festival.  According to Julie Simmonds who runs Le Club Français at Paxcroft Mead, “The children had a wonderful time wearing masks, dressing up and eating pancakes”.

For more information about Le Club Français, see the Paxcroft Mead website.

Last chance to see the Exhibition of Quilts

The exhibition of quilts at Radstock Museum will be closing at the end of March.  This exhibition was only scheduled to run for a few weeks, but it has proved so popular, it has been extended to 30th March.
Over 200 exhibits including antique quilts, contemporary quilts, dolls’ house quilts, Somerset patchwork and much more.
This exhibition, organised by Midsomer Quilting of Chilcompton (www.midsomerq.com) presents a riot of colour and is a visual feast.

Trowbridge Archaeological Group

Thanks to all who attended our very successful inaugural meeting, it was a complete surprise to find so many of you there.
The talk by Dr Joshua Pollard on the Stonehenge Riverside Project was well received, I'm sure we all learned something; I know I did and I was lucky enough to dig there!  We are currently talking to Josh with a view to members being able to take part in the project this year, with the possibility of another training dig and other hands on experience and education as well.
I also enjoyed meeting many of the residents of Paxcroft Mead at the Green Fair last weekend, it is amazing how many closet archaeologists there are!

Our next meeting is on the 26th Feb, 7.45 for 8pm start.  Roy Canham, the retired county archaeologist, is coming to talk to us about the archaeology of West Wiltshire.

This is followed on the 8th March by a members only event - a family friendly visit to Avebury with a tame archaeologist Dr Lucy Ryder.

This has been a great start, much more is being planned including some names you may well recognise, watch this space..................
