Paxcroft Mead News - March 2008

From the Editor

Things are getting pretty busy in the Community Centre.
John Marples, our Chairman, has been working very hard since the last AGM to put our affairs in order.  This process, which is still very much on-going, is partly a requirement of becoming a Registered Charity, and has included setting up Health and Safety policies, disabled accessibility, resolving long standing legal issues with the Centre and much more.
We really do owe John (and his wife Pauline who is our secretary), a debt of gratitude for his tenacity in taking on and dealing with all these issues.

The other on–going task is to deal with the day to day maintenance of the building.  Given the intensive use of the Centre over the last 5 years, things are starting to wear out.  Unfortunately we also suffer from vandalism to both the interior and exterior of the building, which doesn't help things.
For the DIY type of job, we have a willing band of helpers who give up their time to work their way through the ‘Building Book’ list.  For the larger jobs we are forced to use outside contractors.  If you have any skills you could offer to the Centre, please contact me by email to editor@paxcroftmead.org.uk and I'll pass your details on.

My thanks to all those who have contributed to this edition and if you have any news or suggestions for future editions, please email at the address above.

Police Post Box

Police Postbox handover
left to right: Ernie Clark, Alan Sealey, John Marples, PC Lee Pelling
There is now a secure Police post box located on the front wall of the Community Centre.  This is part of the local Neighbourhood Policing Scheme, and allows residents to post their concerns in the box, rather than having to mail them or visit the Police Station.  Karen Beeding one of our Police Community Support Officers has now run a number of ‘surgeries’ (using the small meeting room in the Centre) and these are proving to be of great value to Paxcroft Mead residents.

The picture shows the handing over of the Paxcroft Mead postbox to John Marples .  I have been asked to stress that the box should only be used for non–urgent communication.

In an EMERGENCY always dial 999 and for all NON–EMERGENCY calls, dial 0845 408 7000

Lee Pelling, our Community Beat Manager has more about the scheme and surgeries in his report below.

Bowyers – Beyond Bangers and Pies.

A new exhibition has just opened at Trowbridge museum.  Bowyers – Beyond Bangers and Pies is a colourful exhibition tracing the history of Bowyers over 200 years.  As you probably know, Bowyers is to close next month with production being moved elsewhere.
The exhibition runs until the 14th June 2008.  The museum is open Tuesday - Friday: 10am – 4pm and Saturday: 10am – 4.30pm.  It is closed Sunday and Monday and Bank Holidays.

Trowbridge Police Station

Some of you may have seen in the local press that Trowbridge Police Station Enquiry office is re–opening in April.
Chief Superintendent Julian Kirby made the announcement at a recent Town Council meeting.  Supt. Kirby said the office will open from 9:00 – 17:00 initially, but planned to extend the hours from 9:00 – 21:00, Monday to Saturday.  The office will be closed on Sundays.  Although no date was given, Supt. Kirby was clear the re–opening will be in April.

New Bus Shelter

At long last it has been agreed to provide a bus shelter at the turning circle in Leapgate.
Paxcroft Mead resident, Rev. Des Whale and County Councillor Steve Oldrieve have been campaigning for quite a while to convince the local councils of the need for this bus shelter.  This stop is where most of the schoolchildren wait, in all weathers, for the School Bus.  There have been a few hiccups along the way, but at the Trowbridge Town Council meeting held on the 3rd March, Des and Steve convinced them to fund the shelter.

Congratulations and thanks to Des and Steve.

BLUEZ ‘n’ZUZ Young People's Night Club

The local Neighbourhood Police Teams have now established regular BLUEZ ‘n’ ZUZ Night Club sessions for young people aged 12 – 16.  The next event will be on the 18th April from 7 - 9pm at the Snooker Club, Silver Street, Trowbridge.  Entry is £2.  Further events are planned and listed on the Wiltshire Police website.  Click here for more details.

New Lights

Paddy changing lights
Paddy Reeves 7 metres up, changing the fluorescent tubes
Over the Easter weekend the Community Centre Maintenance Team replaced all the fluorescent light tubes in the Sports Hall.

Sounds simple doesn't it?  But when you consider the lights are over 7 metres from the ground, it is not such an easy job.  Alan Jales led the team and arranged the hire of an electric personnel lift used to provide a safe platform to do the job.

The first challenge was to get the lift into the Sports Hall.  It took four people and many bruises to tip the lift over and bring it through the fire exit.  Once inside and setup, the task went pretty smoothly, with Paddy aloft (see picture) supported by Alan and Jonathan on the ground.

It was surprising just how much damage had been done to the units even though they were so high up.  A couple of units needed replacing (temporarily swapped with units in Hall 2), rather than just the tubes changing, but thankfully most just required a little adjustment or cleaning to bring the lights back to full working order.

The difference is immediately obvious, and will certainly make life easier for the users of the Sports Hall, particularly the Trowbridge Short Mat Bowls Club who have been extremely patient waiting for this job to be completed.

A big thank you to Paddy and Alan for a job well done.  Also thanks to the Mead Club members (Brian, Mark, Alan and Paul the barman) who helped to manhandle the lift on Easter Sunday.
