Paxcroft Mead News
Community Centre Theft and Vandalism
Recently there have been a number of incidents that are causing concern at the Community Centre.
A couple of months ago, thieves ripped a substantial quantity of lead from the roof. If it hadn't been for an eagle-eyed resident who scared them off, they might have got away with more. The cost of the replacement lead alone was £3000, although most of this should be covered by insurance.
More recently there have been a couple of instances where vandals have climbed onto the roof, damaging guttering on two occasions as well as uprooting the paviors around the Centre.
If anyone sees anything suspicious going on around the Community Centre, or Hackett Place, please call the police and don't assume someone else has.
The PMCC committee are looking at ways to install CCTV at the back of the building, as well as introducing other deterents, but we do have to rely on the vigilance of the Community at large.
Wiltshire Council Waste Collection Consultation
The Wiltshire Council consultation on options for waste collection is currently running and comments have to be with Wiltshire Council by August 20th.
In summary, the proposal is that grey bin and green bin collections will continue as at present, that is, on alternate weeks. There are two bits of good news:
- there is no extra charge proposed for the green bin service
- the black bin collection is to include plastic and cardboard
You can view the proposal in detail and make your comments on the Wiltshire Council website by clicking here.

ANTI–SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR - HILPERTON
Over the past couple of months there have been repeated reports of youths gathering and causing Anti Social behaviour in Hilperton. Members of the group often drink and cause a nuisance to local residents and businesses. Some locals have voiced safety concerns. Police will work with partner agencies to address the issues and improve community confidence.
SPEEDING - VILLAGES
The parish councils of West Ashton, North Bradley, Hilperton and Southwick have raised concerns about speeding on roads in their area and asked for police to increase both patrols and enforcement. The farm is open from 1st May to the end of September. Wednesday to Sunday 10 am to 5 pm and Bank Holiday Mondays (closed Monday and Tuesday).

Brokerswood Country Park
We plan to take our granddaughter here in August. The website describes the park as ‘a fabulous day out for the family in a beautiful 80 acre woodland, the park includes play areas, an enchanting narrow gauge railway and fishing lake. They also welcome school visits, birthday parties and barbeques!’
Located in a precious 80 acre fragment of the ancient forest of Selwood, it's a place where nature provides a new surprise every time you return. Stocked with beautiful trees which make British woodlands so striking, it's also alive with birdlife, insects, mammals and amphibians.
The woodland is also a place of fun. Hiding among the trees are two play areas for children of varying ages and with a keen spirit of adventure, including a covered area for toddlers. There is also a play trail to make the journey through the woodland even more enchanting.
Between the two adventure playgrounds runs the woodland railway giving an opportunity to enjoy the woodland in style.
For those who wish to enjoy a barbeque in beautiful natural surroundings, barbeque grills are available for hire beside the fishing lake for just £3 plus £10 refundable deposit. Please note that disposable barbeques are not permitted for environmental and safety reasons.
Of course there is also a caf&eacut; and a gift shop to browse around.
The park is open daily (except 24th-28th December 2009 inclusive and 1st January 2010) from 10am to 6pm in Summer and 10am to 4pm in Winter (last admission 1 hour before closing).
